Why Social Capital is Critical for Resilience

Using data from a number of disasters, Dr. Daniel Aldrich, Co-Director of the Master’s Program in Security and Resilience at Northeastern University, will show how social capital is a critical driver of resilience. More than income, the size of the disaster, or aid from the public and private sector, the strength of social capital predicts both survival and recovery. The talk will involve tabletop exercises along with concrete recommendations for how city planners, disaster managers, and health officials can increase cohesion and cooperation in neighborhoods.

Coney Island Creek Long Term Control Plan Meeting

When there are heavy rains and the sewer system has reached its capacity, a diluted mixture of rain water and sewage, also known as combined sewage, may overflow into local waterways as a combined sewer overflow (CSO). The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is developing CSO Long Term Control Plans (LTCP) to identify and evaluate alternatives to reduce the impact of CSOs in Coney Island Creek.
